“Building an inclusive culture is a priority for GHD, and this extends to partnering with CareerSeekers to access the varied and at times exceptional skills among

humanitarian entrants.”

What is CareerSeekers?

CareerSeekers assists humanitarian entrants in two groups: we help those with tertiary qualifications to find work in the fields they trained for back in their home countries, and support university students to complete internships in their study breaks each year.

For 12 weeks, participants work in corporate jobs in their areas of expertise.

It’s a low-risk proposition for employers – the commitment is capped – but they may be able to offer further work to the intern and reap the benefits of having a more diverse workforce.

Participants, meanwhile, gain vital local experience and local references while earning a professional wage.

CareerSeekers is a program, not a placement. CareerSeekers participants – particularly in our mid-career stream – may need extra support to develop technical skills or adapt their experience to Australian workplaces. With this in mind we offer comprehensive support before, during and post-internship to both participants and employment partners.

All CareerSeekers participants have the right to work in Australia.

What you can expect as an employment partner

Preparation

The success of partnerships is built on preparation of both interns and workplaces.

Interns receive comprehensive pre-employment training before arriving for the first day of their internship, designed and delivered by professionals who know what it takes to build a career in Australia.

We also facilitate a Working with Refugees briefing for the team hosting the intern.

Support

Managers receive ongoing support while hosting interns.

During the first week of the internship, one of our team members facilitates a session to establish objectives with the intern and his or her manager.

Over the course of the internship, we have scheduled check-ins with managers to stay on top of the intern’s progress.

Social Impact

Your participation in CareerSeekers is driving tangible social impact.

Providing an internship allows our participants the chance to rebuild their confidence and provides meaningful income to the intern’s household.

Your staff will also grow and develop during the internship. Mentoring asylum seekers or refugees affords the opportunity to share skills and gain deeper insight into diverse experiences.

How to partner with us

We believe in long-term partnerships. While not every employment partner commits to a multi-year partnership, we believe every partner should commit to supporting their intern throughout their degree and beyond.

The most successful CareerSeekers partners:

  • Have a CEO, Executive Leadership Team and Board supporting the partnership.

  • Have a CEO willing to personally engage with CareerSeekers and interns.

  • Appoint a dedicated person to support the relationship.

  • Provide CareerSeekers with candid feedback that helps make the program stronger and more resilient.

  • Attend CareerSeekers functions, training events and seminars.

  • Encourage staff to be actively involved in CareerSeekers mentoring opportunities.

  • Establish clear workplace goals for interns and provide candid performance feedback at the end of each internship period.
