What is CareerSeekers?

Bridging careers.

We partner with leading organisations to create paid internships for recently arrived refugees and asylum seekers who are looking to restart professional careers in Australia. Internships provide valuable local experience and enable the intern to develop a professional network – both of which are often barriers to new Australians accessing professional employment.

Internships last 12 weeks and can commence at any point during the year, after participants have successfully completed the preparatory stages of the CareerSeekers program.

1. Express interest

Register your details by visiting the ‘Registration’ page.

2. Discuss eligibility

A CareerSeekers team member will contact you to confirm your broad eligibility for the program.

3. Attend orientation

Attend a program orientation to learn more about the program and commitments required. A CareerSeekers team member will assess your suitability for the program during orientation.

4. Work readiness training

Attend a series of workshops with other participants to help set you up for a successful internship.

5. Identify an opportunity

CareerSeekers will put you forward to one of our employment partners for their consideration. This process is driven by employer demand, it can take as little as four weeks or as long as several months.

6. Interview

The employment partner will formally interview you, to assess your suitability for the internship. You will also have the chance to ask questions about how the internship will build your professional skills and experience.

7. Internship

Commence your internship. During your first week, you will sit down with CareerSeekers and your manager to set objectives for the internship. Each week you will provide a progress report to CareerSeekers detailing your accomplishments and asking for any help that you need to get the most out of the internship. You will also be required to present back to your team at the end of your internship.

8. Post-internship

After the completion of the internship your advisor will support you to incorporate your experience from the program into your CV and focus your employment search.

Who is the CareerSeekers Community?

There is no cost to participants, but interns are expected to fully participate in the program.

Currently, the program is open to individuals who are:

Asylum seeker or recently arrived refugee with English language proficiency suitable for a professional workplace
A bachelor degree from a university in their country of origin
Professional experience in their country of origin
Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (consistent with the current policies of many employers regarding interning at their offices and sites)
