What is CareerSeekers?

We partner with leading Australian employers to create paid internships for full-time university students who are asylum seekers or refugees. An internship provides industry experience, a local professional network, and insight into career options.

Internships are suitable for full-time university students in degrees that don’t typically require a mandatory placement. Internships last 12 weeks and are completed over the summer university break, or split between the winter and summer university breaks.

1. Express Interest

Register your details by visiting the ‘Registration‘ page.

2. Discuss eligibility

A CareerSeekers team member will contact you to discuss your suitability for the program.

3. Attend a training day

CareerSeekers will host a series of workshops with new participants to help build confidence and prepare for the workplace.

4. Align with partners

Your skills and preferences will be matched to partner organisations, and you will be put forward to participate in either a winter or summer internship.

5. Interview

Partner organisations will formally interview you, to assess your suitability for the internship.

6. Internship

You will set the objectives of your internship in your first week. In weekly progress reports to your advisor, you’ll detail your accomplishments and ask for any help needed to get the most out of the internship. You will also be required to present back to your team at the end of your internship.

7. Return to study

CareerSeekers provides ongoing support throughout the semester with monthly catch-ups. Non-graduating students have the opportunity to complete further internships.

There is no cost to participants, but interns are expected to actively participate in the program.

Currently, the program is open to students who are:

An asylum seeker or refugee enrolled in full-time tertiary studies
Attending university in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide or Brisbane
Completing studies in or after next year
Completing one of the following degrees: Science (non-medical), Engineering (all types), Commerce / Business (all majors), Information Technology, Mathematics, Law, Arts
Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (consistent with the current policies of many employers regarding interning at their offices and sites)
